The Holiday Travel Season Isn't Quite Over Yet....

Six Tips for Traveling with Your Pets
Let's face it; you're probably going to have to do more traveling before the holidays are over. Bringing your pets along is sometimes a necessity. If you're planning a trip with Fido, here's what you can do to help make the trip safe and enjoyable.  (Note:  It is definitely NOT recommended for you to put your dog in a regular seat belt.  We just thought this was an amusing image.)
1.Dogs and cats need to be secured properly, both for their safety and yours. The first and best option is to crate your animal for the duration of the trip. For large animals, a more feasible option is to use a special harness that attaches to your vehicle's seatbelt. Crates and harnesses are available at your local pet store.
2.The ASPCA cautions against allowing pets to ride with their heads out the window of a moving vehicle. Not only do they risk being hit with a flying object, but they are also at risk of inner ear damage and lung infections.
3.The noises and movement from car travel make many pets anxious. This anxiety can be expressed through barking, shaking, excessive drooling or even vomiting. Prepare your pets for a long trip well before you plan to leave. Start slowly by getting them used to being in the car. Once they are a little more comfortable, condition them with short trips around the block, gradually extending the duration of these trips. If your pet still suffers car anxiety, talk to your veterinarian about medications. Also consider keeping stain and odor remover in the trunk, just in case of an accident.
4.Don't feed your pet right before you plan to leave. Instead, give him or her a light meal a few hours in advance. Never feed your pet in a moving vehicle.
5.Just as you will on a long trip, your pet will need periodic pit stops and stretch breaks, too. Bring along a leash, water and small treats, as well as a favorite toy the pet can play with for some exercise.
6.If you're planning overnight hotel stays, be sure to check in advance whether the hotel has pet-friendly policies.

4 Tips For Holiday Travel With Children

The highways will be crowded this holiday season with drivers making their way to holiday feasts, shopping malls and family visits. If you're planning a trip with children, here are four tips to make the drive safe and enjoyable:
1.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends children sit in the back seat and be buckled-up properly.
Infants (under 20 lbs.) should ride in rear-facing convertible seats with harness straps at or below shoulder level.
Toddlers (20-40 lbs.) should ride in forward-facing convertible seats with harness straps at or above shoulders.
Young children (more than 40 lbs.) should ride in a forward-facing booster seat with the lap belt fitting across the upper thighs and shoulder belt snug across the chest.
2.One of the best ways to keep your family safe is to stay awake during your trip. The National Sleep Foundation and the AAA Foundation recommend the following:
Get a good night's sleep before your trip — 7-9 hours for adults and 8 ½-9 ½ hours for teens
Make sure a passenger is awake to talk to the driver.
Avoid medications that can impair performance.
Recognize signs of fatigue: lane drifting, hitting rumble strips, repeated yawning, tailgating, difficulty focusing.
Schedule stops every two hours or 100 miles.
3.Bring along toys, books and video games to keep the kids busy. If you're planning a long drive, be prepared for frequent bathroom and food stops.
4.If your child gets car sick, check with your doctor about possible medications to bring on the trip. To minimize the risk of carsickness, try driving at a constant speed, cracking a window, and feeding light snacks along the way to prevent the need for a heavy meal.

Official Oregon State Driving Guide For Winter

The Governor's Transportation/Tourism Task Force released a new publication in 2007, the "Oregon Winter Driving Guide", to help motorists safely navigate the roads this winter.

The "Oregon Winter Driving Guide" contains information on Oregon's laws that govern use of tire chains, tips for driving in icy or snowy conditions, and a checklist of equipment for roadside emergencies. The free guide is available at visitor information centers and convention bureaus, welcome centers and information kiosks, Les Schwab Tire Centers, Department of Transportation offices, and from members of the Oregon Lodging Association. The guide is also available online at tripcheck.com, traveloregon.com, oregontic.com, and oregonlodging.com. A link is also available at the end of this page.

OSP and ODOT recommend the following travel safety tips to help get you safely to your destination:

* Expect the unexpected. Be informed and prepared when traveling on any of our highways.

* When traveling anywhere, plan ahead and take known routes if possible. Our weather has been changing quickly and sometimes without warning. For road conditions in Oregon, call 5-1-1 or (800) 977-ODOT (6368). Outside Oregon, dial (503) 588-2941. Visiting TripCheck.com on the Internet provides information on road and weather conditions, incidents and traffic delays, and links to numerous cameras on many mountain passes and major routes.

* Take the time to keep up on current and future weather conditions in the area you are traveling, especially if going to or through higher elevations and mountain passes, areas where your vehicle needs to have appropriate traction tires or devices.

* If considering a remote route that you have never traveled on, don't hesitate to contact available road and weather condition phone numbers or Internet resources, or contact police or highway department officials.

* Prepare an emergency kit to place in your car for longer trips and keep track of how much fuel is in your tank, especially if traveling unfamiliar routes or into remote locations.

* Let friends and family know what routes you plan to take when on a trip, keeping them updated and letting them know if these plans change.

* Drive to the conditions. If it's icy or wet, increase your following distance and reduce your speed. Use your headlights to improve not only your visibility, but also so others can see your vehicle.

* In bad weather, don't use cruise control.

Jiffy Lube Battery Maintenance Services--Everything Starts Here!

Teen Drivers: Drive Smart!

http://www.dontdrivestupid.com/laws

Teen Driving Laws

WHAT LAWS APPLY TO LICENSED DRIVERS UNDER AGE 18?

Graduated Driver License (GDL) is a group of laws allowing beginning drivers to build driving experience before they are exposed to higher risk roadway situations.

GDL NIGHT RESTRICTIONS

A person younger than 17 years cannot drive a motor vehicle in Utah between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. except in emergencies.

GDL PASSENGER RESTRICTIONS

A 16- or 17-year-old driver may not operate a motor vehicle in Utah with any passenger who is not an immediate family member until six months from the date the person's driver license was issued.

CAN I DRIVE A FRIEND AROUND IF I'VE HAD MY LICENSE FOR LESS THAN SIX MONTHS?

No, unless the passengers are immediate family members, it is against the law to drive with others in the car for the first six months of having been issued a driver license. Around 90 percent of teen crashes happen the first months teens have a driver license. Of those killed, a little more than half are the drivers and the rest are passengers.

Drive the Oregon Coast!

It's not too late for a scenic drive down the Oregon Coast.  Check out this article from www.travelandleisure.com for a detailed three-night itinerary that will take you through some of Oregon's most stunning areas.  Find a Jiffy Lube Signature Service Oil Change coupon specific to your region before you hit the road at www.jiffylubediscounts.com.

Portland, Oregon, doesn’t lack for fashionable boutique hotels, but to the west, along the Pacific Ocean, the options have tended to be as primal as the shoreline. Recently, however, a group of properties has sprung up on the northern coast, aiming to seduce 21st-century travelers with designs steeped in post–World War II Modernism. Each stop on this easy three-night itinerary provides a stylish Oregon beach getaway—along with postcard-worthy water views.

Day 1: Portland to Astoria

Follow the Columbia River Highway (U.S. 30) as it meanders along the waterway that led Lewis and Clark to the sea. (For more shore-hugging river views, cross the Oregon Way Bridge, just west of Rainier, and drive on Washington’s Ocean Beach Highway—but be sure to return to Route 30 by crossing back over at Cathlamet.) Make your way to Astoria, the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies (founded in 1811), a revitalized former fishing town with Victorian architecture and a restored 1913 riverfront trolley.
Take in the town—and the mouth of the Columbia River—from the 125-foot Astoria Column, and for a dramatic close-up of the Astoria Bridge, which connects Oregon and Washington, check in to the Cannery Pier Hotel (doubles from $299). Built on the site of a fish-packing facility on a pier that extends 600 feet into the river, the four-year-old hotel embraces a Pacific Northwest version of loft architecture, with exposed steel beams in the atrium-style lobby and hardwood floors in the 46 balconied rooms.
The best place to eat is just a short stroll down the pier at the Bridgewater Bistro (dinner for two $75). The restaurant offers exceptional views of the river and bridge, a tasting room for the Oregon Coast’s Flying Dutchman Winery, and a small-plates menu featuring watermelon-and-feta salad and a savory cheesecake with Dungeness crab.

Day 2: Astoria to Arch Cape

The Oregon Coast Highway (U.S. 26) crosses Youngs Bay and snakes southward almost to Arch Cape, set in the lush green terrain of Oswald West State Park. It’s a 30-mile trip that passes through the monied enclave of Gearhart, as well as Seaside, one of the first beach resorts in Oregon. Be sure to explore the Cannon Beach art colony, comprising 19 galleries and crafts studios; then hit the sand to behold Haystack Rock, a 235-foot-tall basalt formation that’s the third-largest such ocean monolith in the world. You might also want to scope out a spot for dinner in Cannon Beach—locals love the French-Italian dishes such as pesto-and-prawn pasta at Newmans at 988(dinner for two $110)—or stock up on Oregon wine and Tillamook cheese before heading to Arch Cape, a tiny residential community with no restaurants. It is here that Bruce Bessey transformed an old beach house into the Ocean Point Inn & Spa (doubles from $275). The three handsome suites, with mod furnishings, are perfect for curling up in when the rain lashes the wild surf. In fair weather, guests mingle on the oceanfront deck to watch gray whales or gaze at the stars. In the morning, a hearty breakfast with fresh pastries provides fortification for beachcombing. Nestled between two state parks, the inn offers direct access to a nearly deserted Pacific stretch with sand dollar–filled tide pools.

Day 3: Arch Cape to Lincoln City

Lincoln City is a straight 79-mile shot down the 101, past open stretches of sand with more clumps of beach grass than sunbathers. Along the way: Laneda Avenue, in Manzanita, is a charming shopping strip; the Picnic Basket, in Rockaway Beach, has 97 flavors of salt-water taffy;Garibaldi Marina will hook you up for crab hunting and clam digging; and the Hawk Creek Café, in Neskowin, serves fresh seafood and a popular wood-fired pizza. Tillamook is the home of the famous cheddar, as well as ice creams made from local berries. Past Lincoln City, in Newport, is a worthwhile detour: theYaquina Bay Lighthouse, dating from 1871.
The beachfront at Lincoln City is stacked with condo-by-the-sea complexes—which makes the recent renovation of the 141-room Surftides (doubles from $134)that much more welcome. Under the new management of the owners of the hip Farmer’s Daughter hotel, in Los Angeles, the Surftides—first opened in 1936—is now decorated with cork bulletin-board walls and jazzy striped daybeds. The balconied guest rooms reference Midcentury Modern design with sleek built-ins and bold orange accents. You’d swear you were sleeping in an urban boutique hotel, except the roar outside your door is waves, not traffic.

Keep the Juices Flowing.
Replace vital fluids such as motor oil, differential fluid and transmission fluid according to the vehicle manufacturers' time and mileage recommendations.
Motor oil is an engine's lifeblood, reducing friction between moving parts and cleaning away harmful dirt and contaminants in the engine. Generally, drivers should use the lightest grade of oil their vehicle manufacturer recommends for the conditions they drive in. During the winter, this may mean an even lighter grade than usual. The right motor oil grade can save an average of three cents per gallon of gasoline.
Antifreeze/coolant is also important in colder temperatures to keep the engine from freezing.
Breathe Easy.
The engine air filter is like a vehicle's lung, helping the engine breathe as it burns fuel. When the filter gets clogged with dirt, leaves or other contaminants the engine has to work harder to pull clean air into the cylinders, which can reduce fuel economy.
Engine air filters should be periodically inspected and changed.
Amp Up the Energy.
A weak battery is unreliable and may take longer to start on frigid winter mornings. According to the American Automobile Association, a battery can lose 35% of its power at 32° F and 60% of its power at 0° F.
Have the battery tested at the beginning of the season to make sure it has enough cranking power to withstand the cold. To minimize strain, start the vehicle with the heater, lights and window defrosters turned off.
Stay Pumped.
Under-inflated or worn tires are common problems that can be dangerous on slick, icy roads. Under-inflated tires create extra friction where the rubber meets the road, making them wear faster and unevenly. This impacts the vehicle's traction and can possibly lead to dangerous blowouts. Properly inflated tires also provide better cushion between potholes and the tire rim, lessening the risk of wheel alignment damage.
Tire pressure should be checked regularly and filled to the recommended cold level. This information is usually located in the vehicle owner's manual or on a sticker in the doorjamb, trunk or glove box. Correct tire pressure is vehicle-specific, not tire-specific, so do not use the pressure listed on the sidewall of the tire.
Correctly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by about three cents per gallon of gasoline.
Keep an Eye on the Prize.
Windshield washer fluid is critical for good visibility since it helps clear away ice, road grime and dirt. Add more when the reservoir is low.
Wiper blades should glide smoothly across the windshield so they do not leave streaks or blind spots. If there are pits or rough patches on the part that touches the glass, the blade needs to be replaced.
Be Prepared.
A properly packed emergency kit is essential during the winter. It should contain a flashlight, extra batteries, water, flares, blankets, a shovel, a snowbrush, an ice scraper and tire chains where they are allowed by law. Kitty litter or sand can be spread under tires to get better traction when starting from an ice patch or in the snow.
Jiffy Lube® service centers are conveniently located throughout North America and can help drivers get their vehicles in shape for the winter months. A Jiffy Lube Signature Service® Oil Change takes only minutes to perform and includes up to 5 quarts of fresh motor oil and a new oil filter. It also features a fuel efficiency review that includes an assessment of air filters and tire pressure, among other preventive maintenance services.
* Savings estimates based on a $2.00 (USD) cost per gallon of gasoline and government and independent studies.

Jiffy Lube Helps Drivers Choose Best Oil Change Schedule For Their Vehicles

HOUSTON, June 14, 2011 – Jiffy Lube pioneered the fast-lube category more than 30 years ago, changing the way millions of drivers service their vehicles. Today, Jiffy Lube officially introduces a new approach to oil changes that helps customers access and understand their vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, and choose the oil change schedule that is best for their needs.
The new approach, called Oil Change Schedule (OCS), enables customers to choose when they will return to Jiffy Lube for their next oil change based on vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for their individual driving habits and conditions. "Jiffy Lube helped shape the industry, and being a leader means continually re-examining how we serve our customers," explained Stu Crum, president of Jiffy Lube International. "We're committed to arming drivers with the information they need to make informed decisions and create a personalized maintenance plan to help extend the life and value of their vehicles."
How The New Approach Helps Customers
The new approach directly engages customers in the preventive maintenance process by helping them understand what their vehicle manufacturer recommends for oil changes. This includes sharing how their driving style and conditions – whether normal or severe – affect their vehicle, so they can determine when to return for their next oil change. Ultimately, the process aligns the customer's oil change schedule with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, creating a maintenance plan to best suit individual customer needs.
The new approach has been implemented in more than 70 percent of all Jiffy Lube service centers, with 100 percent system participation by the end of 2011.
When customers visit a participating Jiffy Lube service center for a Jiffy Lube Signature Service® Oil Change, they will be given three choices for their new schedule:
  • Follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation for severe driving conditions,
  • Follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation for normal driving conditions, or
  • Select an oil change schedule of their own choosing.
These options are defined by vehicle manufacturer's recommendations and the selection process is quick and easy: a Jiffy Lube customer service advisor reviews the options with the customer and the customer then selects their schedule. Customers will continue to receive a Jiffy Lube window sticker reminding them when to come back for their next oil change, based on the schedule they select.
Drivers who are unsure what constitutes normal and severe driving conditions, or who want to assess their own driving style before their next oil change, can visitJiffyLube.com/education/normalvsseveredriving.aspx to learn about the differences, or they can review their owner's manual.
Reaction to OCS
The OCS approach was driven by the Jiffy Lube commitment to provide the optimal service experience for customers. Since the pilot program roll-out began in August 2009, reaction to the approach has been very positive.
"I feel like Jiffy Lube is working with me and helping me out, and that we're a partnership," said Jiffy Lube customer, Mary Beth Mannino. "I really enjoy having them help me choose when I need to bring my vehicle in."
Members of the Jiffy Lube franchise community who participated in the pilot also see value in the new approach – both for their business and customers. "OCS brings Jiffy Lube to the forefront of the industry by not only educating customers on the proper oil change schedule for their vehicle, but also helping the customer choose the schedule that is right for them," said Rick Brittain, operations manager for Lubricar, a Jiffy Lube franchise in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Jiffy Lube is dedicated to helping drivers keep their vehicles on the road and OCS helps achieve this goal. To find a Jiffy Lube in your area, please visitLocations.JiffyLube.com. 400,000 Miles and Going Strong.

Drivers Determined to Achieve Higher Mileage

Nearly Unanimous, National Survey Reveals Drivers View Oil Changes as Key to Vehicle Longevity
HOUSTON – Roy Lindahl has been driving his white Jeep® Cherokee since the day they drove off the lot together seventeen years ago. He and his vehicle, affectionately nicknamed "Jeepy," recently reached a major milestone when the odometer hit 400,000 miles. It was a proud moment for Lindahl, who has kept Jeepy on a regularpreventive maintenance schedule for years to ensure his reliable companion takes him where he wants to go for years to come. It's been a habit well practiced for Lindahl, who has surprised even maintenance technicians with his Jeep's impressive condition and mileage.
An auto mechanic as a teen, and engineer by trade, Lindahl has seen the impact that neglect can have on a vehicle first hand and he has passed the importance of proper maintenance on to the next generation. His son, who has inherited his passion for vehicles, recently showcased his own restored vehicle in a hometown parade and practices the same dedication to maintenance. It's no surprise that Lindahl and his son are not the only drivers looking to hold onto their vehicles as long as possible. A recent survey conducted by Jiffy Lube International (JLI) reveals that more than half of U.S. drivers hope to have more than 150,000 miles on their vehicle before replacing it, and more than a quarter aspire to clock 250,000 miles or more.
"It just goes to show that regular care of your vehicle pays off – you get out what you put in," said Lindahl who regularly visits the Jiffy Lube service center in his hometown of Lafayette, CA for maintenance. "I must be doing something right because Jeepy just keeps on going. I'm hoping that one day we'll hit the million-mile mark together."
Drivers Want More
The impact of more difficult economic times can be seen in many places including on the road. The average age of a vehicle on the road continues to rise year after year. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average automobile in operation has aged almost three years since 1990. In addition, the majority of vehicles on the road (at nine years old) have logged 110,000 miles, according to NPD's Car Care Trac.
As drivers hold onto their vehicles longer, they are looking for better and easier ways to help protect their vehicle's life. The JLI survey reveals that though drivers universally acknowledge that regular maintenance can help extend the life of their vehicle, many are looking for more out of their maintenance experience. In their desire to extend the life and value of their vehicle, drivers are seeking convenient ways to help them maintain it. More services and convenience are top priorities, with nine out of 10 people surveyed agreeing that having other key vehicle parts and fluids checked during their regular oil change is the most convenient way for them to help preserve their vehicle's value.
While most drivers know what they want out of their maintenance experience, many aren't getting everything they're looking for. In fact:
- 99% of those surveyed would like their tire pressure checked during an oil change visit, but only 78% actually receive the service;
- 99% would like their windshield washer fluid filled, but only 74% leave with it filled;
- 86% are looking for vehicle essentials, including brake fluids, belts, exterior lights and wiper blades to be inspected, however only three-quarters leave with these services actually performed.
Nearly one in five Americans believe the most important thing when having their oil changed is being able to have multiple services performed in a single visit, and more than half (59%) want to have their oil changed in 30 minutes or less. For drivers seeking a convenient way to help extend their vehicle's life, a regular preventive maintenance regiment is essential. Jiffy Lube offers the Jiffy Lube Signature Service® Oil Change to address these needs, providing drivers with much more than just an oil and filter change. The service includes changing, inspecting, checking/filling and cleaning key vehicle parts and fluids and offers drivers a quick and convenient way to maintain their vehicle. The Jiffy Lube Signature Service® Oil Change is a convenient solution that can help drivers preserve the value and longevity of their vehicle.
Keeping My Ride Alive
Keeping a vehicle alive and running beyond its years has long been a source of pride for vehicle owners – particularly in tough economic times. Whether the odometer is sporting double or triple digits, like-minded enthusiasts now have a place to pound their chests and celebrate their high-mileage accomplishments at a new Facebook community, "Keeping My Ride Alive." Visitors can cruise the site to browse photos and stories from other high-mileage drivers, or share their own photos and stories. Newbies to the road, high-mileage heroes and everyone in between are welcome to join the community by "liking" the page and uploading their vehicle's image and story. Visit www.Facebook.com/KeepingMyRideAlive to share your story and read about others.

Survey Methodology:
The Jiffy Lube International survey was conducted via telephone interviews during the period of April 8-11, 2010. The survey was conducted by Opinion Research Corporation.

Jiffy Lube Introduces New Iphone App!

HOUSTON, July 18, 2011 –Jiffy Lube International, Inc. today releases its new iPhone application that puts convenience and education back into car care by giving drivers the ability to store and organize vital vehicle information in the palm of their hand. Additionally, the "app" arms drivers on the go with tips like how to jump a dead battery, what to do if their car overheats and where they can find the nearest Jiffy Lube location.
Jiffy Lube knows drivers are busy and that remembering license plate and vehicle identification numbers (VIN), or when it's time for vehicle maintenance isn't always top of mind. With its new iPhone app, Jiffy Lube provides a simple and convenient place for drivers to keep all of this essential information in one place, easily accessible with additional resources to improve the all around ownership experience.
"We developed the app with our customers in mind, aiming to make vehicle care less of a chore by simplifying and organizing information drivers need," said Eric Eurich, retail marketing director at Jiffy Lube International. "The additional features, including tips and store locator, help make this app a great vehicle assistant by bringing vital information to our customers' fingertips."
At-a-Glance
The Jiffy Lube app helps organize consumers' vehicle information while providing easy access to the preventive maintenance information they need to help their cars stay on the road longer.
The Informed Road Warrior
"My Info" puts vital information at drivers' fingertips, keeping them informed in tough situations like an overheated vehicle or dead battery. License plate, VIN, registration, inspection information, oil change intervals and more can be stored and reminders can be scheduled through the "My Info" feature.
Do I need to check my fluids?
The "My Garage" feature takes the guesswork out of preventive maintenance by providing tips and basic information – based on vehicle manufacturer recommendations. This feature helps users stay in touch with their maintenance schedule and even set their own reminders.
Preventive Maintenance Convenience
The GPS-enabled Jiffy Lube locator and "quick call" feature make it easy for consumers to locate and contact the nearest Jiffy Lube, from wherever they are. These features also inform users what services are performed at particular locations, if there are any coupons available and the ability to share coupons with their Facebook and Twitter networks.
The Jiffy Lube iPhone application is free and is now available in the iPhone App Store. The company plans to release an Android version of the app in the coming year.
